IDEALworks launches business operations in logistics robotics and robotics services

IDEALworks GmbH develops and distributes autonomous logistics robots and their corresponding cloud-based management platform.
Next generation to be launched end of 2020.
Munich. Mid-November marks the official start of business for IDEALworks GmbH. The fully-owned BMW Group subsidiary, headquartered in Munich, will operate in new business segments as a provider of innovative logistics robotics and their corresponding cloud-based management platform. The aim is to become a leading supplier of autonomous robotics solutions in the logistics sector. The name “IDEAL” stands for Industry Driven Engineering for Autonomous Logistics.
IDEALworks and its products
The spin-off went hand in hand with renaming the idealworks products: the Smart Transport Robot (STR) which was developed when the company was still managed by the BMW Group, will now be the iw.hub.
As the flagship product of idealworks, the autonomous mobile robot can transport goods weighing up to one ton, independently calculates its own route and uses the SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) navigation method, which does not require permanent navigation transmitters to be installed in buildings. An integrated battery module from the BMW i3 supplies the iw.hub with power for at least an entire shift. The third generation of the iw.hub will be rolled out at the end of 2020. Currently, more than 130 iw.hubs are in use in series production at several BMW Group production sites.
Alongside the iw.hub, the AnyFleet cloud-based management platform is a key part of the idealworks strategy. A simple and intuitive user interface allows logistics staff to automate existing processes. “The platform can support autonomous transport vehicles from different manufacturers. While idealworks was still under BMW Group management, the team advocated for the standard protocol VDA 5050, which describes the communications between different autonomous transport systems available on the market, in the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA). Regardless of the manufacturer, AnyFleet can be used to manage any autonomous transport system,” explained Jimmy Nassif, CTO IDEALworks GmbH.
“In founding idealworks and launching iw.hub, a product that holds great potential, we are bringing something new to the autonomous industrial vehicles market. We are launching a revised version with new features and, for the first time, the iw.hub is available outside the automotive industry. Since October, we have been carrying out pilot projects with a variety of interested companies to great success. We want to develop idealworks into a top player among the providers of industrial logistics robots,” explained Markus Bauer, COO IDEALworks GmbH.
The iw.hub is equipped with high-performance technology as well as special Nvidia AI modules for steering. As a result, the autonomous logistics robot will see a significant increase in coordination and in its ability to recognize people and objects compared to the technology used to date. Improving navigation means obstacles such as forklifts, tugger trains or people can be identified more precisely and alternative routes can be calculated within milliseconds. The AI-based technology allows the iw.hub to learn and apply different responses to people and objects.
The success of iw.hub and AnyFleet, as well as the future success of IDEALworks GmbH, results from collaboration with innovative drivers of and partners from research as well as sensor and computer technology.
The new company IDEALworks GmbH is located in Munich.
In its initial phase, the team consists of around 30 experts from a wide range of fields and nationalities.

München. Mit Mitte November hat die IDEALworks GmbH offiziell ihren Geschäftsbetrieb aufgenommen. Die 100%ige BMW Group Tochtergesellschaft mit Sitz in München wird als Anbieter innovativer Logistikrobotik und zugehöriger cloudbasierter Steuerungsplattform neue Geschäftsfelder besetzen. Ziel ist es, im Logistikumfeld Premiumanbieter für autonome Robotiklösungen zu sein. Der Namensbestandteil „IDEAL“ steht dabei für Industry Driven Engineering for Autonomous Logistics.
IDEALworks GmbH und ihre Produkte
Mit der Ausgründung einher geht eine Umbenennung der Produkte von idealworks: aus dem zu BMW Group Zeiten entwickelten Smart Transport Robot (STR) wird der iw.hub.
Der iw.hub ist das Aushängeschild von idealworks. Der autonome mobile Roboter kann Güter mit einem Gewicht von bis zu einer Tonne transportieren, berechnet seine ideale Route selbstständig und nutzt dazu das Navigationsverfahren SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping) ohne fest im Gebäude installierte Navigationssender. Ein eingebautes Batteriemodul des BMW i3 versorgt den iw.hub für mindestens eine ganze Arbeitsschicht mit Energie. Ab Ende 2020 wird die nächste Generation des iw.hub ausgerollt. Aktuell sind bereits über 130 iw.hub an mehreren BMW Group Produktionsstandorten im Serieneinsatz.
Nebst dem iw.hub ist die cloudbasierte Steuerungsplattform AnyFleet wichtiger Bestandteil der Strategie der
IDEALworks GmbH. Bestehende Prozesse können über eine einfache und intuitiv bedienbare Benutzeroberfläche von Logistikmitarbeitern autonomisiert werden. „Die Plattform kann autonome Transportfahrzeuge unterschiedlichster Hersteller unterstützen. Noch unter der Leitung der BMW Group engagierte man sich im Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) und im Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbauer (VDMA) für das Standardprotokoll VDA 5050, das die Kommunikation zwischen am Markt verfügbaren autonomen Transportsystemen und einer Leitsteuerung beschreibt. Unabhängig vom Hersteller kann jedes autonome Transportsystem über AnyFleet angesteuert werden“ so Jimmy Nassif, CTO IDEALworks GmbH.

Der iw.hub wird mit Hochleistungstechnologie und speziellen KI-Modulen von Nvidia zur Steuerung ausgestattet. Damit steigert dieser autonome Logistikroboter deutlich seine Koordinationsfähigkeit sowie das Erkennen von Personen und Gegenständen im Vergleich zur bisher verwendeten Technik. Durch die Verbesserung der Navigation werden Hindernisse wie Stapler, Routenzüge oder Mitarbeiter schneller und genauer identifiziert und Alternativrouten innerhalb von Millisekunden berechnet. Die auf künstlicher Intelligenz basierende Technologie lässt den iw.hub unterschiedliche Reaktionen auf Personen oder Gegenstände erlernen und anwenden.
